This Week at Deer Run School June 17-21

National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today, June 21, Deer Run School celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day. We recognized and celebrated the history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada through an assembly and classroom activities. During our assembly we were honoured to have one of our students, Leanne, share some of her Indigenous culture with us. Her beading was beautiful and the story about the importance of the Bear Claw to her was very interesting. Students also heard about the importance of the Wild Rose to the Metis culture and listened to the story “Be a Good Ancestor”. Students were left to think about the quote “Be a good Ancestor with your thoughts, Thoughts become ideas, Ideas become actions, Actions become movements, Movements become change.”

Baton Twirling

This week we have had the privilege to have the Alberta Baton Twirling Association present twirling lessons to each class. On Tuesday and Wednesday, each classroom met with Erin, from ABTA, to learn the basics of Baton twirling. Students learned to spin and toss the batons, roll the baton over their arms and an infinity move. The consensus was that the experience was lots of fun. Thank you to Mrs. Ross for organizing this experience for the school.
