This Week at Deer Run Feb. 2 | Online Safety, Fresh Fruit, Survey, Outside Safety, Art Work
Online Safety
As parents and educators, we often find ourselves working to keep up with our children and their knowledge of the online world and applications. At school, we often field questions about the appropriateness of apps such as Fortnite, Roblox and Snapchat, for students. While it is up to each family and how they want to manage their own child’s online presence, most of these apps are for people 13 and older. Below you will find two websites, recommended by the Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre to help you make an informed decision about what you allow your child to be involved in, online.
Fresh Fruit
If you have visited our Deer Run office, you will notice that we have an offering of bananas, oranges, and apples for students. Students are welcome to get a fresh fruit snack when they feel they need a little something extra. Some families have asked how they can contribute to the fresh fruit cause. Please contact the office if you are interested in donating and we can let you know what we need. It has been noted that some children eat from the fruit bowl 3 and 4 times a day. Please check with your child to ensure they have enough lunch and snacks for the day.
Alberta Education Assurance Survey
In the 2023-24 Alberta Education Assurance Survey, students respond to 25 questions about their experiences at school related to quality of education, teaching and learning in the areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and aspects of a safe, caring and welcoming school. Questions on the survey are accompanied by a scale of responses (e.g., Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree, Very Satisfied to Very Dissatisfied, Don’t Know and N/A). Students will complete the online survey during school hours using a link provided by Alberta Education.
As a parent of a child in grade 4, 7 and/or 10, you will also receive a survey package in the mail from Alberta Education. It will include the survey link and random-access code for you to complete the survey online. This package will also have instructions for accessing the survey in other languages. Please contact James Miller or the main office at 403-777-6840 if you require a survey in a language other than English/French or need any support in completing this survey.
Outside Safety
With the thaw and freeze cycle that we are currently experiencing, you will have noticed that our school grounds are extremely icy. Please continue to take great care when coming to school and walk on the bare cement portions whenever possible. Remember to walk like a penguin! As always, please walk around the staff parking lot using the sidewalk or on the field.
